Wonhyo¡¯s Thought of ¡¯Oneness¡¯ in the perspective of Analytical Psychology
Lee Zuk-Nae

Abstract
Wonhyo¡¯s concept of ¡¯Oneness¡¯ is especially reflected in his views of mind and understanding.
Buddhistic traditions have many theories and views of mind. Generally speaking, however, there are two main theories of the mind itself on the one hand and the mind appearances on the other, which are in conflict. It is closely related to the problem of understanding.
Wonhyo harmonizes two theories, as he views the mind itself and its appearances as ¡¯Oneness¡¯ in the mode of ¡¯neither-same-nor-different¡¯ relation. This view can be seen in the concept of symbol as an image of meaning in analytical psychology. The image and meaning composing symbol are conceptually different, but inseparable in reality, thus symbol can be said as ¡¯Oneness¡¯ of the image and is meaning in the mode of ¡¯neither-same-nor-different¡¯ relation.
As for understanding, Wonhyo regards it subject and object not as dichotomy, but as ¡¯Oneness¡¯. In the subject-object Oneness the reality as such discloses by non-discriminating or total understanding, contrasted from discriminating or partial understanding in the subject-object dichotomous relation. Discriminating and non-discriminating ways of understanding are carried out by the conscious ego and the self respectively in analytical psychology. However, the conscious ego can transcend into the self of ¡¯Egolessness¡¯ by the experience of archetypal effect, resulting into the subject-object Oneness.
